Replace the Google Translate widget

Using Google Translate's website widget and looking for a replacement? alinio shows your website in your visitors' language with one line of code, and in Plain Language or Easy Read if you want. You can correct every sentence yourself.

What Google says about the widget

Google closed the widget to new commercial websites in 2019 and reopened it in 2020 only for government, non-profit and academic websites about COVID-19 (Google's post of 19 May 2020).

Google announced on 1 September 2026 that the website widget would no longer be supported from 1 October 2026. Google later removed the notice from its post, and the script still loads (as of 1 November 2026).

You can read the notice in an archived copy of the post from 9 September 2026. It points site owners to the Google Cloud API. The post gives no reason for removing it.

How to switch

  1. Create an account, add your website and choose the languages you want to offer.
  2. Remove the Google lines from your page template. They usually look like this:
    <div id="google_translate_element"></div>
    <script>
    function googleTranslateElementInit() {
      new google.translate.TranslateElement({pageLanguage: 'en'}, 'google_translate_element');
    }
    </script>
    <script src="//translate.google.com/translate_a/element.js?cb=googleTranslateElementInit"></script>
  3. Paste your snippet into the <head> of every page instead:
    <script src="https://alinio.app/widget.js" data-key="YOUR_SITE_KEY"></script>

Your pages stay exactly where they are. The documentation covers the options.

"Visitors can just use browser translation"

That's true, many browsers can translate pages themselves, and for some visitors that is enough. alinio adds four things you control as the site owner:

  • A visible offer. The language switcher is on your page, so visitors don't need to know about a browser feature.
  • Corrections. You can neither see nor change what a visitor's browser translates. With alinio you correct any sentence in the editor.
  • The same text for everyone. All visitors who choose a language read the same translation.
  • Plain Language and Easy Read. Visitors choose them right in the language switcher, for your website's original language too.

What you should know first

  • Search engines keep indexing your original language, because translation happens in the browser. alinio is not an SEO tool.
  • Page text is sent to a provider of AI models for translation, without any identifiers of your visitors. See the privacy policy.
